UncommonGoods X UIC

ICFF 2019 Student Exhibition

UncommonGoods partnered with the UIC School of Design Exhibition Design class. The class was tasked with creating products that represented the brand values of UncommonGoods. These products were then to be considered for future sale on the official company website.

The class worked closely with one of the lead buyers at UncommonGoods to develop a line of attractive and feasible products. These products were shown at the ICFF 2019 in the student section of the show.

A new purpose for broken skateboards

pile of broken boards 2.jpg

“KICK - it” is designed using broken skateboards to sustainably re purpose a great material.

Ideation:

The thing about using second hand skateboards as a primary material is that each piece of wood tells an incredibly unique story.

I wanted to create objects that required minimal processing of the wood, and used the natural state of the skateboard (in whatever condition it may be in) as a high lite of the design.

 Process:

Kickstarter:

I launched this Chair on Kickstarter. I collaborated with the professional skateboarder, Sebo Walker, to help secure some of his own used boards for one of the chairs. I used skateboards from Uprise Skateshop, located in Chicago, as well as the broken boards of many of my good friends. There were to be a total of 10 chair.
